PALERMO -- Judith Ward Raven, 70, of Palermo, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta campus, after a brief battle with cancer. Judith W. Raven was born Aug. 21, 1940, to Merwin and Edith (Studley) Ward in South Freedom. Judy attended South Freedom Grammar School and graduated from Erskine Academy in 1958, where she was a dormitory student. She graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1962, with a bachelor's degree in sociology (social work option). After graduation, she was employed for Maine Child Welfare Services in the Bangor-Brewer area. She received a master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan in 1967. She was employed 20 years for the Maine Bureau of Retardation in Augusta. In 1967, she and Algene Raven of Knox married. They have been married for 43 years. For 41 of those years, they lived in Palermo raising their family, a son, Judson Raven, and a daughter, Andrea Raven Huff. She was predeceased by her father, Merwin Ward; and her brother, Laurice Ward. Judy is survived by her husband, Algene; her son, Judson Raven, and his wife, Susan, of Vinalhaven; her daughter, Andrea Huff, and her husband, Roger, of Palermo; four well-loved granddaughters, Hannah and Hallee Huff of Palermo and Sarah "Isa" and Elizabeth "Addy" Raven of Vinalhaven; her mother, Edith Ward, of Palermo; sister Frances Ward of Albion; sister-in-law Lona Bourassa and husband Robert of Florida; one uncle, Roy Ward, and wife, Margarite, of Freedom; mother-in-law Bea Raven of Knox; brothers-in-law Melvin Raven and wife Carol of Appleton, Robert Raven and wife Sandy of Burnham, Arnold Raven of Thorndike, and Roger Raven and wife Joan of Knox; sisters-in-law Janice Gardner and husband Joel of Montville, Barbara Raven of Unity, and Myrna Raven of Unity; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta campus, 4th floor Oncology Department, for their kind and professional care during her last few days. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Unity Centre for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St., Unity, with the Rev. Marcia Charles officiating.
