BROOKS - Clayton E. Pattee, 97, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, in Belfast. He was born July 25, 1916, in Monroe, a son of the late Warren and Lula (Bailey) Pattee. He lived all his life in the Monroe-Brooks-Knox area and graduated from Morse Memorial High School in 1934. He married Ethel M. Raven on Oct. 13, 1940.
Clayton worked as a scaler and buyer in the wood industry before going to work for C.A. Paul's Garage in Belfast where he worked for 26 years, retiring in 1981. He was a Mason for 70 years, joining in 1943, and a Past Master of Marsh River Lodge in Brooks. He was also a Past Patron of Happy Valley Chapter Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Brooks Volunteer Fire Department for about 40 years. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and walking in the woods. He was a charter member of Great Farm Rifle Club in Jackson.
In March 2010, Clayton received the Boston Post Cane as the oldest resident of Brooks. In March 2011, he received a Lifetime Heritage Award from Great Farm Rifle Club in Jackson honoring him as co-founder, the first president, and a life-long member of the Club.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ethel of Brooks; two daughters, Linda Pattee of Brooks, and Jacqueline Bradeen of Unity; six grandchildren, Emily Ellis of Bangor, Eileen Ellis of Brooks, Clayton Ellis and his wife, Carla, of Brooks, Deidre Hurst and her husband, Richard, of West Milford, N.J., Billie MacLean and her husband, Aaron, of Ashland, and Rex Bradeen and his wife, Heather, of Jericho, Vt.; ten great-grandchildren, Hillary and Ellis Throckmorton of Bangor, Sydney, Michaela and Isaac Ellis of Brooks, Vaughn Hurst of West Milford, N.J., Wes and Owen Bradeen of Jericho, Vt., and Kayla and Macy MacLean of Ashland; and a special son-in-law, Vaughn Ellis of Brooks. He is also survived by two nephews, Anthony Pattee of Bronson, Fla., and Lyman Pattee and his wife, Doris, of South Attleboro, Mass.; two nieces, Betty-Lou Buffington and her husband, Robert, of Middleboro, Mass., and Sherry Hall of Plymouth, Mass.; and several cousins.
In addition to his parents, Clayton was predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen Elllis; and his brother, Millard Pattee.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Rose Cemetery, Brooks, officiated by Elizabeth Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Arthur Jewell Health Center or Brooks Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
