NORTHFIELD - John K. Thompson Sr., 73, husband of Ferne (Raven) Thompson, died unexpectedly July 4 1992, at a Machias hospital after a period of ill health. He was born at Northfield, Sept. 14, 1918, the son of Samuel and Amelia (Lyon) Thompson. He was a 1936 graduate of Washington Academy, East Machias. A U.S Army veteran, he entered the service Jan. 21, 1942, and was discharged Nov. 30, 1945. He served in the Rhine land and Central Europe campaigns. He resided in Northfield most of his life, where he was self-employed as a dairy farmer and school bus driver and served as tax assessor for many years. John had been a past member of the Wesley Grange and was a sixth degree member of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. He was one of the first corporators of Downeast Community Hospital. Machias, serving until his death. He was a member of the Machias Valley Sportsmens Club and the Machias Valley Senior Citizens. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, two daughters, Janet Thompson of Portsmouth, R.I., and Kathryn Buehring of Huachuca City. Ariz.; one son, John K. Thompson Jr. of Northfield; a grandson, Cory of Machias; one brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Joan Thompson of Calais: several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Ralph Charles, Lawrence and Paul; and by a sister, Alice Day. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gardner Hall Funeral Home, Machias, where friends may call from 12 noon until time of service. The Rev. Norman Duzen will officiate. Interment will be in Northfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Downeast Community Hospital, Machias, or to the Machias Meals for Me Program.
