WORCESTER -- Christy L. Vasil, 84, of Harlem Street, a former market owner, died Friday, Nov. 1, in Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
He leaves his wife of 20 years, Sophie (Kowalczyk) Gawronski-Vasil; a stepson, Mark J. Gawronski of Millbury; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth T. Kurowski of Keene, N.H., and Dorothy I. Provencal of Worcester; a sister, Tefta Gagnon of Lunenburg; seven stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-granddaughter; nephews and nieces; grandnephews and grandnieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Louis and Sevasti (Tontonoz) Vasil, and graduated in 1939 from Commerce High School.
Mr. Vasil owned and operated Victory Market for 25 years. He also worked at the Red Baron Deli and Lounge for five years. He was a member of St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church and its Sons of St. Mary. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance, and a former vice president of its local chapter. He was a founder of Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, from Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., with a service at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the funeral home. A Trisagion service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church Building Fund, 535 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609; or to Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 300 Barber Ave., Worcester, MA 01606.
