EASTHAM - Josephine R. "Jo" (Pooler) Fitzgerald, 79, of North Eastham, formerly of Worcester, died Tuesday at home after a long struggle with diabetes.
Her husband of 29 years, George E. Fitzgerald, died in 1971. She leaves two daughters, Lois A. Kyes of Fort Myers, Fla., and Barbara J. Fitzgerald of Brewster; a sister, Ruth N. Duncan of Washburn, Maine; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Her son, John J. Fitzgerald of Tucson, died in 1995. She was born in Washburn, Maine, daughter of Joseph E. and Minnie B. (Raven) Pooler, and later lived in Bangor, Maine. She then lived many years in Worcester and 28 years in North Eastham. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1937 and David H. Fanning Girls Trade High School in Worcester.
Mrs. Fitzgerald began her career as a hairdresser in Worcester. She then taught cosmetology for many years at Leo's Beauty Institute and Broms Academy of Hairdressing, both in Worcester. She was then the first matron at the newly opened Nauset Regional High School in Eastham for 10 years, retiring in 1982.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was a former member of St. Joan of Arc Church. She was an inveterate traveler. Even when she was confined to a wheelchair, she traveled to the Grand Canyon and several other national parks.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. After cremation, her ashes will be scattered at sea. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Massachusetts, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608. The National Cremation Society, Fort Myers, Fla., is directing arrangements.

WASHBURN, Sept. 5--A wedding of interest to local residents took place in Worcester, Mass., July 26, when Josephine Pooler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Pooler of Washburn became the bride of George Edward Fitzgerald, son of Mrs. Annie Fitzerald of 10 Allendale street, Worcester, Mass. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Charles Dolan in St. Paul's church at 6:15 a.m., in the presence of immediate relatives and friends.
The bride wore a maize-colored suit with hat and accessories of white and corsage of sweetheart roses. Her bridesmaid, Annie Kenney, sister of the bridegroom, wore a blue suit with beige accessories and a corsage of gardenias.
The groom was attended by a brother, Harold Kenney of Putnam, Conn.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was graduated from Washburn High School and previous to her marriage has been employed in Worcester. Mr. Fitzgerald is a graduate of Worcester schools and at present is employed in the Worcester Post Office. They plan to reside in Worcester.
