THORNDIKE -- Guy Porter Sr. of Thorndike passed away Oct. 12, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. Guy was born Oct. 22, 1927 to William and Geneva Porter in New Brunswick, Canada. Guy was a hard worker. He started work in the woods at a young age and then worked at Penobscot Poultry and Maine Reduction. He drove tractor trailer trucks throughout New England and into Canada. He helped to build the Waldo County Vocational School. He started at Krisway in 1985, retiring in 1993. After taking a few months off, he went back to Krisway working in the garage and later went to work at Hodges in Unity, retiring June of 2014 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Along the way Guy made many friends as he was well liked by many. This was in part because he was a good listener, a good source of advice, a kind and caring man and a very good story teller. Guy enjoyed singing and playing his guitar.
Guy was a member of The Living Church of God. He believed greatly in God and read his Bible faithfully. He was a man who always tried to do the right thing and would always lend a hand when needed.
Guy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy Porter; his children, Nancy Bradeen of Unity, Guy Jr. of Swanville and friend Kathryn Hutchinson, Betty Cronin and spouse Pat of Montville, Susan Porter of Brooks; his sisters Elva Littlefield, Ellen Roberts, Leila Cole and brother Cecil Porter; his grandchildren Allison Peckham and spouse Frank, Aaron Bradeen and spouse Kim, Robert Potter, Jaime Oakes, Melissa Potter, Bobby Porter, Brandon Cyr and spouse Megan, Danielle Cyr; many great grandchildren; special nephews David Porter and spouse Rhonda and Timothy Porter who have helped a great deal over the past few months.
Guy was predeceased by brothers Clarence, Wallace, Glenn, Carroll, Sydney Porter and sisters Dorothy Koch, Beulah Porter and Marianne Porter.
Special thanks to the Maine General Hospice staff. Special thanks to Cathy. Thanks to all who visited and sat with him telling stories, making him laugh and just making his day a little better. Guy was a special man who will be missed by many.
There will be a gathering at his home in Thorndike on Oct. 26 from 10-12 noon for family and friends. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.
