• Obituary: VillageSoup, 13 Jan 2014, Belfast, ME. It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Lloyd Washburn Sylvester, 96, passed away Jan. 7. He was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Belfast a son of Vivian and Evangeline (Washburn) Sylvester. He lived most of his life in Searsport, a town he loved. He graduated from the Brick High School in Searsport at 15. He played the piano at his graduation, at 18 he joined the Camden Civilian Conservation Choir. He was stationed at Fort Williams in Portland, Maine. The boys worked hard clearing land, building roads and parks. The work was done mostly by hand. The pay was $20 a month. The boys were paid $5 and $15 was sent home to help the parents, although Lloyd's parents could have used the money they put it in the bank, so Lloyd could attend a Electronic School in California when he returned home from C.C.C's. He went to Californian by bus, where he attended "Radio Engineers School." After he graduated he got a job at Lockeed Aircraft in California. Later he moved to Hollywood where he worked various jobs. After returning home he worked with McKay's Construction when the government decided to build the Army Air Force Tank. He was a surveyors rod man until all the facilities were plotted and laid out. He later opened Lloyd's Electronic Shop in Searsport, which wasn't very successful. He was a member of Sears Lodge and the Rebecca's for many years. He played the piano at many events there. He was a member of the Searsport Historical Society. He also was a Boy Scout Leader. He sang tenor in the Belfast Choral Society. He attended the Searsport Full Gospel Church for many years. He also was an usher there for many years. He seldom missed a church service. He was a wonderful husband and father. He was never known to say an unkind word about anyone. He was an avid reader. He worked in the Searsport Post Office for 26 years as Post Master, Mail Sorter and Desk Clerk. He also worked as a substitute mail carrier. He is survived by his wife Millie (Merry) Sylvester; five sons Paul, David, Daniel and Nell, Michael and Pat, Peter and Sandra; grandchildren Jeremy, Samantha and John, Henry and Sinjta, Joshua and Cindy, Kathleen and Chris, Rachael, Matthew and Marc; great-grandchildren John, Maria, Madison, Noah, Orien, Azurah, Phineas, Keira, Cameron, Devon, Austin and Zishe. He was predeceased by one brother Alan Sylvester, and two aunts Mary and Sadie. His request is to be cremated under the loving care of Young Funeral Home in Searsport. In keeping with Lloyd's wishes there will be no funeral services.

• Newspaper Article: Bangor Daily News, 14 Nov 1950, Bangor, ME. BELFAST, Nov. 13 -- Mildred Anna Merry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Merry, Sr., of Smart Road, Belfast, and Lloyd Washburn Sylvester, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Sylvester of Searsport, were married at the Mason's Mills church in East Belfast, recently, the Rev. David Wigley of the Searsport Methodist church officiating at the double ring ceremony. There were 140 guests present, many from out of town. The church was decorated in pink, blue and yellow. The bride was given in marriage by her father, she wore a white frosted organdie gown over white satin, made with full skirt and fitted bodice with high neckline. Her veil of bridal illusion and satin fell from a head dress of chrysanthemums, and she carried a shower bouquet of mixed flowers. The bride also wore a brooch belonging to Mr. Sylvester's grandmother, Mrs. Washburn of Madison, which was a heirloom in the family. The wedding march was played by Mrs. Arthur Ridley of Searsport, and Mrs. John H. Merry, Jr., and Mrs. Elwood Merry, sisters-in-law of the bride, sand "I Love You Truly" and "Because". The bride was attended by her sister, Mrs. Hermon Robbins, who wore pale pink organdie over satin, floor length, and carried a basket of mixed flowers [sic] The best man was Charles Gordon of Searsport, a cousin of the bridegroom, and Foster Gross was usher. Mrs. Merry, mother of the bride, wore a gown of navy blue, with white accessories, and corsage of carnations and sweet peas. The bridegroom's mother, Mrs. Sylvester, wore a black gown with white accessories, and corsage of roses and sweet peas. A reception followed immediately after the ceremony, and a wedding cake, the first slice of which was cut by the bride, was served with punch. Mrs. Ralph Gross, assisted by Mrs. Clayton Clark, Miss Marguerite Ellis, Mrs. Earle Merry, Mrs. Irving Moulton, Mrs. John Merry, Jr., and Miss Faustina Thompson served. Mrs. Foster Gross was in charge of the gift table, and Mrs. Elwood Merry of the guest book. The bride and bridegroom left after the reception for a short wedding trip, the bride travelling in a navy blue suit, with accessories of blue and gray. She is a graduate of Crosby High School of Belfast and Mr. Sylvester graduated from Searsport high. He is now employed in Gorham and they are to live there upon their return from their honeymoon trip.
