William L. Briggs, 85, died Jan. 21, 1990, at Gorham. He was born in Chipman, New Brunswick, Canada, July 25, 1904, the son of Herbert and Dora (Orchard) Briggs. For many years he had been employed at the Northern Chemical Plant in Searsport. He was a member of the Belfast United Methodist Church and the International Order of Odd Fellows in Searsport. He is survived by two sons, William E. Briggs of Hampden and Robert D. Briggs of Dover, N.H.; two daughters, June P. Riley of Belfast and Nancy E. Pattershall of Gorham; one foster son, Peter Patten of Westbrook; one brother, Harlan Briggs of St. John, New Brunswick; two sisters, Evelyn Murray and Fern Murray, both of Chipman, New Brunswick; 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Rackliffe Funeral Home, Belfast, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1990, with the Rev. James Begley of the Belfast United Methodist Church, officiating. Spring interment will be in Grove Cemetery, Belfast. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the United Methodist Church, Miller Street, Belfast 04915.

William married Edith May Carson, daughter of Frank Alden Carson Sr. and Laney Elenor McDermott, on 7 Mar 1936 in Belfast, Waldo, Maine, United States. (Edith May Carson was born on 21 Dec 1915 in Ashland, Aroostook, Maine, United States, died on 5 Dec 1964 in Belfast, Waldo, Maine, United States and was buried in Grove Cemetery, Belfast, Waldo, Maine, United States.)
