Russell was a retired lumberjack and a member of the Congregational Church in Ellington, Conn. He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred H. Gardner. He is survived by one daughter, Alice Jane Drew of Masardis; four sons, Joseph Eugene Gardner of Plainfield, Conn., Richard Russell Gardner of Lake Alfred, Fla., Carroll Jon Gardner of Winter Haven, Fla., and Chief Petty Officer Michael Gardner of Rhode Island: one sister, Mable Robinson of Ashland; two brothers, Merrill Gardner of Farmington, Conn., and Robert Gardiner of Vernon, Conn.; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Russell married Mildred Hattie Whipple, daughter of William Roscoe Whipple and Hattie Eliza Carson, on 23 Nov 1941 in Ashland, ME.1 (Mildred Hattie Whipple was born on 6 Mar 1915 in Dixmont, ME,6 7 died on 16 Jun 1989 in Winter Haven, FL and was buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Vernon, CT.)
