• Newspaper Article: Bangor Daily News, 3 Sep 2002, Bangor, ME. Excerpt from the article "Old Belfast bridge made of memories":
Bruce and Alan Evans know which way they will vote. Now on the front side of 50, the Evans brothers have fond memories of summer days of long ago, fishing from the bridge and gathering bait.
From a card table at the Belfast American Legion hall, the brothers reminisced this past weekend about the bridge.
"We'd love to save the bridge," Alan Evans said. "It's a cultural identity of this town. Everybody knows that Belfast would never be the same without it. We really must have the bridge."
Both remember the days when the city's chicken processing plants were thriving and fresh bait was as near as a culvert spewing offal from the factory.
"We were using chicken lungs," recalled Bruce Evans. "We'd snag them when they came out of the culvert and put them on our hooks. When the chicken plants were running, it would bring in the stripers, I'm talking 15-16 pound striped bass. I caught everything off that bridge: lobsters, crabs, even a couple seals, but you don't reel them in. I even caught a sea gull one day. It grabbed my mackerel and took off. I had to reel it into the bridge and it was clawing and scratching the heck out of me until I got the hook out and watched it fly away."
