 PORTLAND, June 21 -- Thomas Carlton Abbott, 42, formerly of Knox, died Saturday evening in a local hospital after a short illness.
 Born January 21, 1917, in Knox, he was the son of Charles and Etta May (Raven) Abbott.
 He attended Knox schools and graduated from Freedom Academy. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, in the European theatre.
 Abbott came to Portland 12 years ago. He had been employed in local shoe shops. Recently he was a hand sewer at the Songo Shoe Co.
 He was a member of the Nazerene Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of South Portland.
 Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Marguerite (Hussey) Abbott, two sons, Gary and Richard Abbott; one daughter, Sandra Abbott, all of Portland; his parents of Thorndike; one brother, Roland C. Abbott of Homer, Alaska; one nephew and eight nieces.
 Funeral Services will be held here Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at 749 Congress Street with the Rev. Richard Howard officiating.
 Burial will be at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
