• Newspaper Article: Bangor Daily News, 18 Sep 1961, Bangor, ME. Boy's Quick Thinking, Man's Quick Action Save Lad's Life SEARSPORT -- Quick thinking on the part of a 13-year old Searsport boy, Wayne Hamilton, and the swimming ability of James Light, about 25, of Searsport combined Saturday afternoon to save the life of a 10-year-old lad here. Allen Evans, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Evans, was playing with two other companions, one of them his brother, and another Searsport boy. The three boys were taking turns riding the one bicycle among them, on the steamboat wharf at the end of Steamboat Avenue. Toppled Into Water Observers said Allen hit a rough plank, which toppled him over the handlebars into deep water at the side of the wharf. The tide was high at the time and the bicyle sank out of sight. Allen floundered in the water and Wayne Hamilton who lives in the area said he tried to pass him a piece of plank but that Allen didn't seem to pay attention. The boy sank below the surface of the water for the third time. Hamilton sped on foot to the home of James Light, who lives near the Hamilton home. Light ran to the wharf, located the boy, dove into the water and brought him to the surface. More Help Arrives Light said, "The boy was lying on his back, his eyes were open and I heard no sound as I brought him from the water." By this time other children in the area had notified their parents who in turn had notified the fire department, the police department, Young's ambulance, the boy's parents and help from a nearby filling station. Assisting in giving artificial respiration, besides Light, were Mrs. Roy Bragdon, another resident who lives nearby; Leroy F. Moody, the local Boy Scout mater, and Floyd McLeod, who happened to be at the filling station with Moody. The Searsport Fire Department provided oxygen and the lad was taken to Waldo County Hospital by Young's ambulance where he was said to be in satisfactory condition Sunday. The Evans boy's glasses and the bicycle were recovered some time later in the day by Warner Hamilton and Louis Rich. Also recovered were glasses lost by Light in the rescue.
• Newspaper Article: Bangor Daily News, 3 Sep 2002, Bangor, ME. Excerpt from the article "Old Belfast bridge made of memories": Bruce and Alan Evans know which way they will vote. Now on the front side of 50, the Evans brothers have fond memories of summer days of long ago, fishing from the bridge and gathering bait. From a card table at the Belfast American Legion hall, the brothers reminisced this past weekend about the bridge. "We'd love to save the bridge," Alan Evans said. "It's a cultural identity of this town. Everybody knows that Belfast would never be the same without it. We really must have the bridge." Both remember the days when the city's chicken processing plants were thriving and fresh bait was as near as a culvert spewing offal from the factory. "We were using chicken lungs," recalled Bruce Evans. "We'd snag them when they came out of the culvert and put them on our hooks. When the chicken plants were running, it would bring in the stripers, I'm talking 15-16 pound striped bass. I caught everything off that bridge: lobsters, crabs, even a couple seals, but you don't reel them in. I even caught a sea gull one day. It grabbed my mackerel and took off. I had to reel it into the bridge and it was clawing and scratching the heck out of me until I got the hook out and watched it fly away."
