LUBEC and OXBOW -- Henry S. Carson, 74, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at the Down East Community Hospital in Machias. He was born Aug. 22, 1927, at Houlton, the son of Harry and Florence (Smith) Carson.
He graduated from Ashland High School in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving with the Seaman Guard at Newport, R.I. and as Master at Arms in Washington, D.C. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended Aroostook State Teachers College at Presque Isle and transferred to the University of Maine at Orono where he received his BS degree in Wildlife Conservation in 1951. He was hired by the Wildlife Division of the Inland Fisheries & Game Department in 1951 and was the first biologist to be stationed in Northern Maine, with headquarters at Ashland. He worked 24 years at Ashland and nine years in Machias as the Regional Wildlife Biologist until he retired in 1984.
He resided at Lubec and had a seasonal dwelling at Oxbow, where he was raised as a young child. He was a charter member of the Aroostook River Fish & Game Club and served on the Search and Rescue team. He was a member of the Donald Delaite Post 109 American Legion and served a term as post commander. He received an honorary life-time pass from the North Maine Woods Group in 1994. His hobbies were lobstering, hand lining, trapping, hunting, fishing, carpentry, vegetable gardens, making maple syrup, grafting/reestablishing apple orchards and especially exploring the North Maine Woods with his dog, Chip.
He was predeceased by his wife, Viola (McGuigan) Carson in 1982. Surviving family members are two daughters, Victoria of Brookline, N.H., Caroline of Concord, N.H. three sons, Douglas and his wife, Rosaura of Waldorf, Md., Robert and his wife, Peggy of Oxbow, Thomas and his wife, Tammy of Slidell, La.; and three grandsons.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the Oxbow Congregational Church, followed by an interment service at the Ashland Municipal Cemetery. The Carson Family will host a luncheon reception following the graveside prayer at the Ashland Union Congregational Church recreation hall on Sheridan Rd, from 12:30-2 p.m. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
