• Obituary: Bangor Daily News, 5 Sep 2012, Bangor, ME. LAKELAND, Fla., and FORT KENT - Kermit L. Pooler was called to the Celestial Lodge above, that house not built with hands, eternal in the heavens, Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, surrounded by his loving wife and close personal friends. He was born June 4, 1947, in Washburn, the son of Eugene Clyde and Oral Irene (Langin) Pooler. He graduated from Washburn High School in 1965. His parents realized the importance of education and encouraged him to pursue post-secondary education. He graduated from Fort Kent State College - University of Maine at Fort Kent - in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education, and was a founding member of the RHO Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi. It was here that he met the love of his life, Sue, and they wed in 1969. In 1960 he began his 30-year career in education as a social studies teacher at Madawaska High School, but quickly realized his passion was working with special education students. He spent the early years teaching special education in the summers as well. He earned his master's degree in special education from the University of Maine, Orono. In 1985 he was hired as the special education director. In 1988 he was promoted to the assistant principal position and in 1989 he became the principal of Madawaska High School. He later went on to become the director of curriculum for the Madawaska School Department, K-12, but he missed working with the students tremendously. He returned to the school environment when he was hired as principal at Fort Kent Community High School for three years, until his retirement in June 1999, looking forward to days of golfing in the sun. Kermit was immensely proud of his three children, Eric, Kathie and Jesse, and all of their accomplishments. His family was his pride and joy. Kermit and Sue worked hand-in-hand to build their house and do repairs throughout the years. He was a jack-of-all-trades willing to tackle any challenge himself, and passed on those skills to his two sons. He was a generous, unselfish, compassionate and loyal man; a "gentle giant." Kermit was an avid outdoorsman and especially loved hunting, fishing, canoeing, snowmobiling and golfing. He was a member of the Dirty Dozen snowmobile club in Fort Kent. In 1995 he built the North Star camp with his son, Jesse and good friends. He was a member of Fort Kent Lions Club and a member of Fort Kent Masonic Lodge No. 209, where he held several chairs and was Master of the lodge for two years. Kermit was raised to Sublime Degree of a Master Mason in 1981. Kermit and Sue were married for 43 years. They lived 34 of those years in Fort Kent, before moving nine years ago to Schalamar Creek in Lakeland, Fla., so Kermit could golf and Sue could enjoy her sunshine year round. He loved his Florida life with many new friends both on and off the golf course. He always had a warm smile on his face and a joke to make you laugh. Kermit provided the family with both strength and courage during his relentless health challenges the last few years. Love and laughter were his best weapons. Kermit will be deeply missed by his wife, Suzanne (Giroux); two sons, Eric and Shannon of Buxton and Jesse and wife, Keri, of Tacoma, Wash.; one daughter, Kathie Toomey and husband, Sean, of Bellevue, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Abigail, Emma, Brian, Emily, Kaitlyn, Kate, McKenzie, Ryan and Calleigh; sister, Lois McCrossin; and extended family, as well as special friends both in northern Maine and central Florida. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved spending time with family. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Oct. 20 at St. Louis Catholic Church, preceded by a Masonic ritual 10:30 a.m. Family and friends may offer their condolences 8 a.m. until the services. There will be a gathering of family and friends after the Mass at the Knights of Columbus. Arrangements have been made by Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. In lieu of flowers, family and friends may make a donation in his name to Children's Miracle Network, 205 West 700 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84101 or donate a book to the Madawaska High School Library or Fort Kent Community Library.
