BURNHAM-Norma Shirley (Gordon) Duplisea, born July 28, 1928, passed on August 24, 2023. She was 95 years young.
Born and reared in Belfast, Maine, to parents Walter C. Gordon and Bernice E. Merry Gordon, Norma also lived in New York and New Jersey as a young girl. In 1945, back in Belfast, she met H. Garfield Duplisea at the Bear Trap dancehall, where she "trapped him" by asking him to dance. He was on leave from the Army and later sent her an engagement ring through the mail. They married in 1947 and moved to his hometown of Burnham, Maine, where they raised a family of five children. She was primarily a mother and homemaker, but also worked at Northeast Shoe Company, Boisvert Eye Care, and as a school crossing guard.
Norma was famous for her cooking and baking, especially her pies, homemade doughnuts, and bread, which she shared and distributed to family and friends. She made quilts and crocheted doilies which, along with her pies and blueberry muffins, won blue ribbons at local fairs. She was active with the Waldo County Extension Homemakers and her local Seniors Club, where she played a winning hand of cribbage. She never tired and was known for her get-up-and-go spirit. Norma was proud of her children's successes and the fact that they all know how to cook and clean. She loved all of her children and grandchildren equally, even if she did not have the opportunity to see all of them.
She was predeceased by her husband, H. Garfield; siblings: Marie Russell, Walter Gordon, Jr., Alton Gordon, Sr., and Carlene Hall; firstborn son, Herbert Garfield, Jr.; granddaughter, Michelle Goodrich; and great-grandson, Benjamin Duplisea.
She is survived by her children: Gerald (Beverly), Dale (Myrna), Dawn Ann McMann (Roger), Ronald (Kate), and Brian (Lisa); 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Her loving and devoted daughter, Dawn Ann, provided selfless and unwavering care for her and was at her side as she peacefully passed. Norma's warm love and generosity will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, September 1, 2023, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A reception will immediately follow at the Elks Lodge, Middle St., Pittsfield.
