BANGOR and SEARSPORT -- Rev. John H. Merry Sr., 98, went to be with Jesus, July 23, 1993. He fought a courageous battle against cancer at home and in a Bangor Hospital, praising God until the end. He was born in Woodland, Aroostook County, March 8, 1895, the son of Herbert and Selena (Raven) Merry. He was a loving husband, caring father, grandfather, "Old Papa". He was a minister of the Gospel for more than 70 years. John showed his great love for family and friends through daily living, by his ability to forgive and never pass judgment on others. A hard working man, he had a fish route for years. Until this year, he planted a large garden annually, sharing his produce with family and friends. He said he never felt closer to God than when he was working in his garden. Surviving are his beloved wife, Arline Merry of Bangor; two sons and wives, Earl and Hazel Merry of Searsport, Ervin and Faustina Merry of Belfast; four daughters, Marie and Alex Opdahl of Monroe, Ina and Irving Moulton of Knox, Millie and Lloyd Sylvester of Searsport, Ruth and Herman Robbins of Belfast; two daughters-in-law, Delores Merry and Barbara Merry Nickerson of Belfast; one stepson and wife, Dale and Ruth Rogerson of Madera, Calif.; 30 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, four great-stepgrandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by W. "Randy" and Charlene Randall and many other in-laws. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sadie (Dyer) Merry in 1974; sons John Merry Jr. in 1985, Elwood Merry in 1988; and a beloved grandson, Herman "Peter" Robbins in 1974. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 1993, at Young Funeral Home, U.S. Route 1, Searsport. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, July 26, at the Searsport Full Gospel Church with the Rev. Ronald Libby of Charleston officiating. Burial will be at East Thorndike Cemetery, Thorndike.
